Michael Everette Taylor

First Mate/Watch Captain

Michael Taylor was born in Mississippi. As the child of a parent in the military, his upbringing was truly a global one. In his adult life, he has traveled the world as an officer of the Army. He has lived in Kailua, O‘ahu since 1986. Mike volunteers for the Polynesian Voyaging Society and the Captain’s Club, a sailing program for disadvantaged children.

“I enjoy three aspects of voyaging with PVS: advancing of the values and objectives of PVS, meeting so many inspiring, friendly, and dedicated people, and finally I truly do live for the adventure of open ocean sailing and discovery. I am particularly interested in the voyage to Palmyra because I have long wanted to see this intriguing, rarely visited sailing destination. I have heard about Palmyra for so long, but never thought I would see it. As a diver, I am anxious to see Palmyra’s untouched reefs, even if only from the surface.”

“For the worldwide voyage, I would love to sail the entire voyage. I also hope to captain a couple of legs of the Hōkūle’a voyage, and perhaps spend the rest of the trip on the escort vessel or crewing the canoe for another captain. I’m very excited to see how this goes.”
