Kailin Kulani Rose Kim

Crew

Kailin Kim, known by most as Kai, is 17 years-old and the youngest crew member on this voyage. She is already a seasoned crew member of Hōkūle‘a, having participated in the Kapu Nā Keiki program for high school students. Kai is from Kamiloiki, O‘ahu, and will be graduating this year from Kaiser High School. Kai is also a student at Kapi‘olani Community College and is taking the Ho‘okele class taught by Ka‘iulani Murphy (navigator of Hōkūle‘a).

“I feel extremely lucky to get the opportunity to sail home on Hōkūle’a from Palmyra. This will be my longest voyage yet and very good training for me. I plan to learn as much as I can on the canoe and I am excited to see what Palmyra Atoll is like. From this trip, I hope to inspire more people my age to become interested in the ocean and canoes. I would love to see more young people involved in the worldwide voyage and learning about navigation.”
