Jenna Chiyono Ishii

Crew

Jenna Ishii is from Honolulu, O‘ahu. She produces educational documentary films in Hawai‘i through the Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools.

“The stories that intrigue me the most,” she says, “are those of local community organizations that connect our youth with their land and ocean environment and aim to produce future leaders.”

“I am honored to be a part of the ‘Ohana Wa‘a community. This voyage to Palmyra Island will be one of exploration and discovery. I hope that by witnessing and documenting the pristine beauty and fragility of Palmyra’s terrestrial and marine life, our crew members will inspire the people of Hawai‘i to protect and pre-serve our island home for future generations.”

“My hope for the voyage around the world is to inspire young leaders locally and globally to become active and engaged citizens at home. The journey begins now, and it will be the transformations that take place in preparing for the voyage that will determine our success at sea. If, through this voyage, we can shift the vision of the education system in Hawai‘i to value the 21st century skills that all students need to know, we have been successful. If we can help to restore villages, such as Mokauea Fishing Village, into self-sustained communities, we have been successful. And if we can encourage our current local, national and international leaders to care about their home and their people, we can sail home to Hawai‘i and know that we have made a difference.”
