Heather Nahaku Kalei

Crew

Heather Kalei, better known as Nahaku, is from Hilo on the island of Hawai‘i. She is completing her last semester of school, and is excited to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering in May.

“I’m really thrilled to have the chance to visit Palmyra and see its flourishing reef ecosystem. That’s not to say that reef habitats in Hawai‘i are terrible, but I doubt that anyone has seen such a well-preserved reef in Hawai‘i in a very long time. To see a reef of a quality so much greater than our own will help us understand what ours lacks and will empower us to speak from experience about what we want for our home.”

“I hope that during this voyage we will form connections where there are none, so that in times of struggle we may reach out to those who have become friends and family, who are no longer just vague names from far away countries with no emotions or memory attached to them. There is an ancient knowledge of stewardship for the Earth and for one another. Personally, I hope that we can rediscover this, tap into its wisdom and stand up for what is right for the planet because in the end it benefits everyone.”
