“It is a great honor to be on Hōkūle’a, sharing culture through education. For the Palmyra trip, I am interested in learning about sustainability and bringing new ideas and lessons learned home so that we can apply them to our daily lives. Palmyra’s isolation is intriguing. How can a place such as that exist so far away? What are its resources like? I come from a family that puts a lot of emphasis on health – body, soul, and spirit. My family believes that one needs balance to be healthy and the environment is part of that balance. We must look at things holistically and learn how we can live in balance with the environment.”

“This worldwide voyage is very exciting. I want to learn how different cultures can better coexist. Hawai‘i has a lot to share with the world due to our multicultural society. It’s important to learn about other cultures so we can be sensitive to their beliefs and practices. Education is important. Education does not just happen through books. One can also live life and experience it. After the worldwide voyage, I would like to share what I have learned in schools and ‘talk-story’ sessions. I want to show that although we may be far apartin distance, we still share similar values. I hope to be sailing not solely for myself, but for my family, my community, and the people of Hawai‘i.”
