Recently, Nainoa Thompson and the Kapu Nā Keiki crew visited the beautiful island of Moloka‘i to attend their Sust‘ĀINAble Molokai Conference. They returned inspired by the people of the Friendly Island and their commitment to returning to the sustainable ways of their people.

During a recent trip to Hawai‘i, members of the World Youth Congress took a break from planning their 2010 Congress in Turkey to visit the Hōkūle‘a.
Upon the arrival of Hōkūle‘a and Kama Hele to Yokohama, the final stop of our 2007 voyage, we first met Hitoshi Miyashita of Haiyama, Japan.
Sailing around the world aboard the iconic Hawaiian voyaging canoe, riding the ocean swells, meeting incredible people and experiencing new cultures… it all sounds very exciting. And, it is. But, beyond the romance of the sea, there's a lot of hard work and incredible commitment. Hōkūle'a crewmembers are among the most dedicated people in the world.
As part of the training for the Hōkūle‘a Worldwide Voyage, crews have been working with schools to teach the rich traditions of Polynesian voyaging and the greater message of protecting our island home, Earth.
A wonderful example of some of the work being done is the connection crew member Kalea Wong has made with the dual language program at Kawaiaha‘o School. The haumāna (students) studied the ecosystem of Palmyra Atoll and sent questions to Kaleo as he sailed from the pristine protected environment back to Hawai‘i.
Captain Mike Taylor is using the rough waters of the Ka‘iwi Channel to train his crew for the Hōkūle‘a Worldwide Voyage. Here they share a little of the preparation necessary.
Mahalo to the 5th grade students of Mililani Uka and their parents and teachers. Together they hosted a Star Party where all learned about the solar system, non-instrument navigation and astronomy. Hōkūle‘a navigator Ka‘iulani Murphy joined in to share information about the stars Hōkūle‘a crews use to navigate while voyaging.
Incredible voyagers from around the Pacfic are currently training for the Hōkūle‘a Worldwide Voyage. Recently, Hōkūle‘a sailed to the Island of Hawai‘i to give Big Island crews the opportunity to train aboard the iconic vessel.

While voyaging and navigation are passions our crewmembers share, itʻs amazing how broad their interests are. In the next few months, we will share some of the other varied interests of some of our crew.
