The Hawaiian reef environment is very fragile. About 50 years ago, an incredibly agressive predator fish, the roi, was introduced here. It has since spread throughout the Hawaiian islands and is a major cause in the decline of native reef species.
Beginning in 2008, The Roi Round-Up began organizing spearfishing tournaments targeting the roi. With tournaments on Maui, O‘ahu, Moloka‘i, Hawai‘i Island and Kaua‘i (hosting their first event this weekend), skin divers take part in the "invasives-only" contests where there are no catch limits or size minimums.
The community is invited to help support the Round-Ups in some simple ways.
This Friday, July 30 between 5 pm and midnight, the Maui Brewing Company in Kahana is giving 50% of their house beer and pizza special sales to the Round-Up.
Additionally, Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Lāhaina is sponsoring a bookfair between August 13 - 15 where a percentage of sales (including the coffee shop) will be given to the Roi Round-up. During these days, simply tell your cashier that "Iʻm here to support the bookfair," and a portion of your purchase will automatically go to the Round-Up.
Finally, please join us for a Roi Round-Up Event on August 15 at the Hard Rock Cafe on Maui between 10 am and 3 pm. Thereʻll be lots of action including the fish weigh-in.
Hope you enjoy and mahalo for your support!
