Combining Traditional and Contemporary Knowledge in Education

The Hōkūle‘a Worldwide Voyage is honored to be working with educators from around the world. These dedicated professionals and community members are offering invaluable insight on how to both learn and teach through our voyages.

We are constantly amazed at the wealth of traditional knowledge and how it continues to be not only relevant, but essential for healthy communities.

One program that is combining Hawaiian traditional knowledge with modern technology to teach young people is the Hawai‘i Technology Academy.

In conjunction with Creative Academies, they are offering keiki the opportunity to learn about voyaging, the Hawaiian ahupua‘a and modern climate and sustainability sciences through a virtual world in which they interact.

We didn’t create the following video, but we found it very interesting. Teachers, if you have other ideas about how culture and sustainability can be shared, weʻd love to hear from you.
