Many of our crewmembers are working on a campaign called The Real Food Challenge. They're working to unite with students nationwide for a healthy, just and sustainable food system.
With the goal of shifting $1 billion of college food spending to real food (community-based, fair, ecologically sound and humanely produced food) by the year 2020, the Real Food Challenge is organizing student summits, trainings and leadership retreats to train the next generations of leaders and advocates.
Across the nation, students are starting community farms and gardens, working with farm and food system workers, developing real food climate change solutions and challenging their schools to provide just and sustainable foods in their cafeterias, stores and restaurants.
Some organizations working locally for real food include: ‘Āina in Schools, Hawai‘i Farm to Schools, Slow Food Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Organic Farmers Association. Additionally, there are many organic farms throughout the islands. We encourage everyone in Hawai‘i Nei to look for products from these local growers.
