Canoe Traditions: Aleut

Baidarka photo by Paul Jonason

Sea faring people around the world have created a wealth of voyaging traditions. From the Buffalo Post we learned of the journey of one high school student who is working to keep his peopleʻs traditions alive.

A high school senior, Jared Fennell, chose as his senior project to make a traditional Aleut seagoing kayak called a baidarka. In honor of his grandmother who remembers hunting seal from such a kayak as a girl, Jared will paddle his kayak as part of the Tribal Canoe Journey.
