The history of Hawai‘i is rich with incredible men and women who shaped our cultural landscape. One such person is King David Kalākaua, the Merrie Monarch.
A true renaissance man, Kalākaua embraced modern technology while advocating traditional Hawaiian arts and knowledge.
In honor of King Kalākaua, Dr. Paul Coleman and Kehaulani Souza visited Kalākaua Middle School to share with the students and parents.
Dr. Coleman spoke about both celestial navigation and the fascinating history of of King Kalākauaʻs life and achievements.
Kehaulani shared some of her incredible research on the history and significance of Mokauea Island and Ke‘ehi Lagoon. One day soon we hope to have a blog on their roles in voyaging and their relationship to Papahānaumokuakea (the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands).
Mahalo nui loa to Dr. Coleman, Kehaulani Souza and the students and parents of Kalākaua Middle School.
