School Children Visit Hōkūle‘a

As part of the training for the Hōkūle‘a Worldwide Voyage, crews have been working with schools to teach the rich traditions of Polynesian voyaging and the greater message of protecting our island home, Earth.

A wonderful example of some of the work being done is the connection crew member Kalea Wong has made with the dual language program at Kawaiaha‘o School. The haumāna (students) studied the ecosystem of Palmyra Atoll and sent questions to Kaleo as he sailed from the pristine protected environment back to Hawai‘i.

Upon the return of Hōkūle‘a, Keleo and fellow crew Kamaka Seipp and Nahaku Kalei hosted the keiki onboard. Following Hawaiian protocols, the haumāna presented makana (gifts) which included oli (chants), pū‘olo (bundles from the land and the sea), and items they made.

The crew replied by giving the keiki the gift of knowledge.
