What is a "navigatorʻs mind"?

A navigator aboard Hōkūle‘a needs to do several things in order to successfully guide her to her destination. These same values can be incorporated into our daily lives.

  1. Set a destination. If we donʻt know where weʻre going, how will we possibly get there?
  2. Set a sailplan. Itʻs not enough to know the final destination. Navigators determine the best course considering the vessel, the crew, the weather, the ocean and other environmental conditions.
  3. Uniting with the crew. Working together with the family of the canoe, the navigator and the crew do all in their power to sail the canoe in the selected direction.
  4. Diligently watch the surrounding conditions. At any moment an environmental condition can put the voyage in jeopardy. Paying close heed to everything that happens around them, the navigators are able to stay on course in good conditions and tack when conditions call for it.
  5. Change course when necessary. Even the best sail plans need to be modified as wind and waves change. However, even as the navigator changes course, they always remember the utimate destination.

So, whether youʻre voyaging toward a safe walkway in your neighborhood, a plastic bag ban in your community or a protected watershed, let us know how youʻre navigating to a better future.
