Even when not aboard Hōkūle'a, crewmembers continue to train in whatever ways they can. One of the most important things someone interested in becoming a crewmember can do is to get in the ocean. Swimming, surfing and paddling are all important ways of increasing your ocean competence. Additionally, steering a canoe helps you understand how steering occurs on a much bigger scale aboard Hōkūle‘a.
So, we encouage everyone to get in the ocean. Enjoy it. Love it. Protect it.
