Preparing for a Storm

This week, the Hōkūle‘a crew put aside preparations for their expected voyage to the Big Island of Hawai‘i to get ready for an oncoming storm. As Hurricane Felicia traveled westward across the Pacific towards Hawai‘i, the crew battened down the hatches and readied the canoe to move to safer waters.

While, thankfully, Hurricane Felicia dissipated to a tropical depression before her arrival to the islands, the crew was able to use this opportunity to train for storm conditions.

Now that the threat of storm has passed, both O‘ahu and Hawai‘i crews are refitting Hōkūle‘a for her voyage to the Big Island.

Weather permitting, Pōmai Bertelmann will captain the wa‘a to the island of Hawai‘i this weekend and stay for several weeks in order to give Big Island crewmembers the chance to train aboard Hōkūle‘a for the Worldwide Voyage.
