Kama Hele Evening Report

Aloha kākou,

3.15.09 - Our day started with too little wind and from the wrong direction, but things began to improve around 1 pm and Bruce ordered, “Drop the tow.”  We sailed all afternoon under a brilliant blue sky, clear overhead and a ring of cumulus on the horizon all around.  The large swell has subsided and the seas are gentle and kindly.  It’s invigorating to be sailing again.

date-time group 151841 HST March 2009;  position 12 degrees 31.40 minutes North 158 degrees 53.68 minutes West

nm since sunrise -  62.3 nm (6 hrs towing and 6 hrs sailing), course 185 degrees True
avg speed 5.2 knots
distance and bearing to Palmyra – 441 nm, 205 degrees True
distance and bearing back to Sand Island – 531 nm, 06 degrees True

Sunset reports from all vessels indicated vessels and crews are fine.  At 6:41 pm, we were on a course of 185 degrees True and making 5 knots at that time.

Winds:  E 11-13 knots
Sea state: NE swell 3-4 ft
Clouds:  our first visible high clouds, a small amount of wispy, streaky cirrus – hopefully a harbinger of the trades Hans thinks might fill in for the remainder of the trip;  360 degree ring of low cumulus on the horizon

Aloha,

Mike Taylor, Kama Hele escort boat
