Become a Voyager

Interested in becoming a voyager?

For those interested in sailing on the Hōkūle‘a as part of the worldwide voyage, there are many criteria including:

Hokulea Voyager

  • First and foremost, commitment.
  • The ability to be at sea safely.
  • The time to train onboard, in the ocean and on land.
  • The willingness to give back to your community.  Each crew member is required to work with students within their own communities to help educate new leaders.
  • The willingness to give back to the ‘Ohana Wa‘a (family of canoes). A lot of time is spent ensuring that the canoes and their escort vessels stay in sound condition.
  • The ability to be a good team member. Working well together in a small space is essential.

If this sounds like something to which you are able to commit, please contact the Polynesian Voyaging Society at pvshawaii@hawaiiantel.net or call (808) 842-1101 to learn more about what it takes to voyage aboard the Hōkūle‘a.

Interested in becoming a virtual voyager?

We are currently working on ways to create our online community of voyagers. If you have any suggestions of what you would like to see as part of this community or what you would like to learn about voyaging, please contact us.
