Island Wisdom, Global Solutions, the 2008 conference theme, created the ideal context
for Nainoa Thompson to announce the Worldwide Voyage, in the midst of a gathering rich with fiscal, intellectual and political resources. Exploration of The Power of Community will generate dialogue at the 2009 conference, enriched by the presence of Hōkūle‘a and the passionate voices of young crew members just returned from their training sail to Palmyra.
Since 2002, the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) and the University of Hawai‘i, Honolulu Community College’s Marine Education and Training Center have been working together to develop a learning center that combines the voyaging and cultural expertise of PVS and the educational background of HCC/METC into a new, experience-driven format of training for future students. The Worldwide Voyage will mark the formal beginning of a new format for the education of individuals throughout Hawai‘i, and eventually, beyond.

Mālama Hawai‘i provides networking, communications and outreach services to support this vision.
The Nature Conservancy is the leading non-profit conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. The Conservancy owns and manages part of Palmyra Atoll, Cooper Island, as a nature reserve and the world’s most natural marine laboratory.
PVS was founded in 1973 to research how Polynesian seafarers discovered and settled nearly every inhabitable island in the Pacific Ocean before European explorers arrived in the 16th century. Today, they have sailed more than 125,000 (equivalent to six times around the world). PVS is committed to strengthening learning that integrates voyaging experiences into quality education.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. The lands and waters of most of Palmyra Atoll are designated as the Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, and recently, Palmyra Atoll became part of the Pacific Remote Islands National Marine Monument under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
