Our Micronesian Cousins Are Voyaging Too!

According to an April 24 article in the Marianas Variety, a Micronesian newspaper, 25 traditional voyagers arrived to Saipan on three canoes after five days of sailing to take part in the Flame Tree Arts Festival. A 70 year old navigator, Topias Urupoa, led 15 voyagers on two of the canoes that sailed from Satawal (home of Mau Piailug). The third canoe carrying 10 people was navigated by Cesario Sewralur, Mau Piailug's son.

The Magic of Avoiding Seasickness

Aloha,

I am experimenting with many different ways to avoid sea sickness while on this epic voyage. I will be updating my findings as we sail DOWNWIND to Palmyra Atoll! The real test will be to ask a crew member on the UPWIND leg from Palmyra Atoll to Hawai‘i what their trick is for avoiding sea sickness... we'll keep you posted.

So far, here are the natural and medicinal remedies I have tried when sailing UPWIND:

(These are my findings from our last three UPWIND sails that were pretty rough)

Successes:

Ginger pills - 3 pills 3 hours before sailing (mentally helped)

Last Minute Preparations

Today we did all of the last minute preparations as we wait for the winds to calm down. Tomorrow, we will go for a short sail to test out the crab claw sails and make sure the canoe is balanced with all of the food and gear packed in the hulls. Crossing our fingers that we can leave on Monday!!!
