World Oceans Day

In celebration of World Oceans Day, the crew of Hōkūle‘a share some of their footage from the recent voyage to Palmyra. This pristine coral reef system is a wonderful example of how our oceans can rebound from extreme damage with just a little care.

The United Nations designated June 8, 2009 as the first “World Oceans Day.” Understanding that oceans are essential to the health and survival of all life as well as food security, power our climate and are a critical part of the biosphere, World Oceans Day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans.

The theme of this inaugural observance of the World Oceans Day is “Our Oceans, Our Responsibility.”
